- <p> When Elizabeth Taylor couldn't greet reporters outside a
- Santa Monica, Calif., hospital last week, she sent a message.
- She'd come out and wave to them but "wasn't in her balcony
- attire." It was a gallant excuse from the violet-eyed actress,
- 58, whose bout with viral pneumonia had landed her in an
- intensive-care unit and, her doctor says, put her life briefly
- "in jeopardy." When she first became ill, rumors flew that she
- had AIDS, but tests proved negative. Though the immediate threat
- has passed, the doctor cautioned that Liz is not yet out of the
- woods.
